The Meetto are a large agricultural, matrilineal people group found in the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique. Christianity arrived with the first Catholic mission about 100 years ago. The evangelical churches were planted much later when evangelists from the southern, more Christianized region of the country were sent north during the civil war of the 1980s.

The Meetto New Testament was published in 2021, and the churches are now asking for a poetic translation of the Psalms.

I go out regularly to the small villages on my motorbike. I share the Gospel and distribute Meetto material. I have a bunch of videos, showing bush churches singing some of the psalm-songs that they have learned.

We really enjoy the discussions about the psalms’ meaning. Many of us now feel equipped to preach on the Psalms. Before, we would not have thought to do so.

After the workshop, when I went home for the weekend, I preached on Ps 12. I used the text we translated a few days earlier. The community was deeply touched by this lament.
